What happened in Top hole:
We found shallow gas, and suddenly had to rely on surface equipment (iBOPs on the DDM) as a second barrier on the string.

What Was Planned

As we always do, 1 x float installed in both 9 7/8″ and 17 1/2″ BHAs. No expectations of encountering shallow gas.

What Was Learned

“Standard practice” only provides one float in each BHA used on Top Hole.

What Actions Are Required

Consider specifying in the planning stage a second float for each BHA for Top Hole drilling. Double floats in all BHAs are standard practice in UBD (UnderBalanced Drilling) and coiled tubing drilling operations. If we hit shallow gas then we have two barriers on the string side.
