Positive Bit LL with INEOS

Fat Canyon (6306/3-1 S) – Intermediate section

What happened:

ROP dropped from 50 m/hr to 1 m/hr

What was planned:

Drill Shetland and Kvitnos formation with 1 2 1/4″ PDC bit

What was learned:

So called plastic clay killed ROP. PDC bit with low measured depth of cut control ( MDOC), did not bite into the formation. We tried with bits up to 40/1000 inch MDOC, with poor results.

The first bit was pulled and was partially balled up with soft-hard clay. This may have affected the ROP and performance.

What actions are required:

Try to have back-up bits with higher MDOC and aggressive cutting structure for potential plastic clays in the future.

Mix and be prepared to pump anti bit balling pill.

What Was Done

On the second bit run we ran a PDC bit with 40/1000 inch MDOC, but this was not sufficient.

ON the second bit run we tried to pump and soak the bit in a antil bit balling pill. This seemed to improve things.
