What happened in P&A:
8 hrs were used cutting the extension joints. During the cutting a high stick-slip was observed by the ROV. This resulted in stopping cutting and checking the knives several times, extending the cutting period.

What Was Planned

Cut the 30″ and 20″ extension joints using the Weatherford MOST tool with a new tension mandrel.

What Was Learned

An investigation of the tension mandrel onshore revealed that some set screws on the spring return shoulder had been sheared off, allowing for the return spring to torque up and release when the rotational friction was overcome, resulting in the stick-slip motion.

What Actions Are Required

Weatherford has redesigned the tension mandrel without the use of the set screws that were sheared off. Ensure to follow up how the tool performs with the improved design prior to selecting provider for future wells.
