Deepsea Yantai

What happened in :
Difficult to see with the ROV at seabed due to poor visibility and loose seabed conduction.

What Was Planned

To use a standard “Konsberg ms1000” sonar on the ROV.

What Was Learned

Could be useful to have Gemini (multibeam) sonar on the ROV’s when the vision at seabed is poor. The difference is that MS1000 sends out a single sound wave and show it at the screen as a fan (like a radar). The Gemini sonar sends out many sound waves at once and make a live image. This is mounted on the side of the camera and can be adjusted in the direction the camera is pointed. Its helpful with poor vision. The standard sonar is mounted on the ROV and does not give a lot of information when the ROV is close to a object due to a shadow effect.

What Actions Are Required

Consider using Gemini (multibeam) sonar with soft seabed condition.
